Three ways to hold an arena

Coil Snake Arena, Dropolis Hole and Bocage Land Grab are .io games: one shared arena, rivals that never stop moving, and a round that ends when you are caught. In Coil Snake Arena you steer a snake through a round arena with a dozen rival snakes, eat glowing dots to grow and climb a live top five. In Dropolis Hole you steer a hole through a small city and swallow everything smaller than you, from benches to towers, before the 90 second clock runs out, with three rival holes roaming the same streets. In Bocage Land Grab you steer a marker that lays a hedge line behind it, and every loop you close back onto your land turns the line and everything it encloses into your field, rival fields included.
All three are free to play in the browser on a phone, a tablet or a computer, with no account. Each has a daily challenge that is the same for every player that day, and each keeps your progress on the device you play on, with a sync code to move it to another device.
How a round is lost
In Coil Snake Arena a snake whose head touches another snake's body is out and breaks into a trail of large dots, so you get in front of a rival and let it run into you. When two heads meet the longer snake survives and a tie takes out both, and the red edge of the arena is fatal too. In Dropolis Hole a clearly bigger hole swallows a smaller one: if a rival swallows you the run ends, and arrows at the screen edge show where the rivals are. In Bocage Land Grab the danger is your own open line: if any marker touches it, or you run into it yourself, you lose every field you hold and come back after two and a half seconds on a fresh plot, so the round goes on.
Steering and controls
Coil Snake Arena follows the mouse, turns toward your finger when you drag anywhere on a phone, or steers with the left and right arrows or A and D; holding the mouse button, Space or the up arrow boosts at the cost of length. Dropolis Hole steers like a joystick: drag anywhere on the screen, or use WASD or the arrow keys. Bocage Land Grab turns your marker toward the mouse pointer, steers with the arrow keys or WASD, or follows a finger slid anywhere on a phone and keeps going when you lift it; Space or the Root button plants a root.
Missions, hard modes and arenas
Coil Snake Arena has 18 missions from a first kill to length 2000, and growing to length 150 opens hard mode, where every rival hunts you. Dropolis Hole grows the hole through 10 size steps, and finishing a round in first place opens hard mode, with faster rivals that pick their food better. Bocage Land Grab has seven arenas of four stages each, 28 stages in all, with brooks and bridges, orchard trees, fast droves, ice, mist and windmill sails, and a round is won by holding the most land when the clock runs out or by reaching the stage's share of the map first. Every 150 squares you claim grow a root, up to three, and Root turns your open line into land on the spot. Clearing the first arena opens hard mode, with two more rivals and roots that grow at half speed, and each stage has three star goals such as one claim of 5 percent of the map or cutting two rivals in one round.
Rivals and playing with friends
The rivals are not alike: some snakes in Coil Snake Arena hunt you, some run from anything bigger, some graze and some go for the dots a crashed snake leaves, and Bocage Land Grab has six rival personalities, from one that makes small careful loops off its own edge to one that hunts open lines. Bocage Land Grab is also the only one of the three with Play with a friend: two to six people share one arena, the game's rivals fill the field, and a rival takes over a seat if someone leaves. Coil Snake Arena and Dropolis Hole are played alone against computer rivals.
Frequently asked questions
Which .io game is the easiest to start with?
Dropolis Hole. You drag anywhere, the hole follows, and the only rule is that you eat what is smaller.
Coil Snake Arena uses the same kind of drag, and
Bocage Land Grab adds a line you have to bring back to your land before anyone touches it.
What happens when I lose a round?
In Coil Snake Arena and Dropolis Hole the run ends and your final length or score is shown. In Bocage Land Grab you lose every field you hold and come back after two and a half seconds on a fresh plot, so you can still win the round.
Can I play an .io game with friends?
Bocage Land Grab can: choose Play with a friend, and two to six people share one arena with the game's rivals filling the field. Coil Snake Arena and Dropolis Hole are played alone.
