About Rosewood Xiangqi
A rosewood board, its river worn pale between the Chu and Han banks where generations of hands have reached across. The pieces wait in their camps: one general behind its advisors, chariots on the flanks, cannons a step forward.
Xiangqi (Chinese chess, cờ tướng) against the computer at five levels or a friend online, with piece lessons, 50 mating problems and a daily problem.
How to play Rosewood Xiangqi
Pick Match or Lessons and problems on the title screen. In a match choose Red or Black and a level from 1 to 5; Red moves first. Tap a piece to see its legal moves as dots, then tap a point to move there, or drag the piece. The general and advisors stay in the palace, elephants never cross the river and are blocked by a piece on the point between, the horse is blocked by a piece next to it, the cannon captures only by jumping exactly one piece, pawns step sideways once across the river, and the two generals may never face each other on an open file. You win by checkmate, or when your opponent has no legal move at all. The third repetition of a position ends the game: a side that gave check with every move of the cycle loses, so does a side that kept chasing an unprotected piece, and anything else is a draw. Sixty moves each without a capture, or no attacking pieces left on either side, is a draw. Threats turns on the threat view: dots turn green where the piece is safe and red where it can be taken, and rings mark your pieces under attack. Undo takes back your move and the computer's reply, Hint shows the move the computer would play. In Lessons and problems, the first chapter teaches each piece and the next five hold 50 problems where Red wins within a set number of moves against the best defence; a wrong move is shown with the reply that escapes and taken back. Hard mode removes the move dots, the threat view, Undo and Hint, and in problems one wrong move ends the try. To play a friend, choose Play with a friend, create a game and send the link.

Features
Five computer levels
Level 1 misses captures and walks into traps; level 5 searches deeply and punishes every unprotected piece. Play either Red or Black.
A lesson for every piece
Twelve lessons teach the chariot, horse, elephant, advisor, general, cannon and pawn with their blocks and limits, ending on a first checkmate.
50 mating problems
Five chapters, each on its own board, with mates in one to five moves built on chariots, horses, cannons, pawns and three-piece attacks. Each problem has one winning first move.
Threat view
One button shows which of your pieces are attacked and whether each move dot is safe, so you learn to see the board before you lose a piece.
Daily problem
Every player gets the same problem each day, scored on stars and speed, with the day's percentile when you finish.

Tips
- Before every move, look at what your opponent's last move attacks; most games at the lower levels are lost to an unprotected chariot or horse.
- Open the files for your chariots early: a chariot that has not moved by the tenth move is the most common reason a game turns against you.
- Count screens before you trust a defence: a cannon two points behind a piece in front of your general is already giving check through it.
- Keep both advisors near your general while the opponent still has a chariot and a horse; a general without guards falls to a horse-and-chariot mate in a few moves.
- Your own general attacks the whole file it stands on, because the generals may not face each other: use it to take squares from the enemy general in the endgame.
Frequently asked questions
What happens when a position repeats in Rosewood Xiangqi?
The third time the same position comes back with the same side to move, the game ends. A side that gave check with every move of that cycle loses, and so does a side whose every move kept attacking an unprotected piece; otherwise it is a draw.
Is stalemate a draw in xiangqi?
No. A player who has no legal move loses, whether or not the general is in check.
I do not read Chinese characters. Can I still play?
Yes. Choose Symbols under Pieces on the title screen: each piece then shows a picture, such as a wheel for the chariot and a horse's head for the horse.
How many problems are there?
Twelve lessons and 50 problems in six chapters, each with three stars to earn, plus a new daily problem every day.
Does Rosewood Xiangqi save my progress?
Stars, best scores and unlocked chapters save on this device. Use the site's Sync devices feature with a code to carry them to another device, no account needed.
What does hard mode change?
It opens after you win a match or finish the Chariots chapter. Move dots, the threat view, Undo and Hint are off, and in problems one wrong move ends the try.
