About Barchan Block Puzzle
Out on the erg a barchan dune walks a few metres a year, and the caravan trays walk with it. Fill a row of glazed tiles and it falls back to sand; send that sand into the right gap and the whole tray settles in a rush.
A block puzzle on an 8x8 board: cleared blocks turn to sand and fall into the gaps below, setting off cascades. 30 Journey stages and races.
How to play Barchan Block Puzzle
Three pieces wait beside the board. Drag one onto the board; a shadow shows where it will land and lights every row and column it will complete. A full row or column clears, and every cleared block that had an empty cell right under it crumbles into sand; a block resting on another block or on the floor has nowhere to pour, so its sand blows away, which is why a full column always clears clean. Sand always falls until it rests on a block, on other sand or on the floor, including sand that was lying on a line that just cleared; glazed blocks stay where you put them. Sand fills lines like any block, so a clear can finish the row below it and clear again: a cascade, and every step of it multiplies the points. Clearing on consecutive moves builds a streak that multiplies them again; the streak survives two moves without a clear and breaks on the third. When all three pieces are placed, three new ones arrive, and bigger shapes come more often as the run goes on. The run ends when none of the pieces fits anywhere. Journey mode has 30 stages in five places, each with its own starting board, a goal and a fixed number of pieces. On a keyboard, 1 to 3 picks a piece, the arrow keys move it and Enter or Space places it.

Features
Blocks that turn to sand
A cleared block over an empty cell crumbles into sand, and sand falls until it rests on something. Glazed blocks stay where you put them.
Cascades
Sand fills lines like any block, so one clear can finish the row below it and clear again. Each step of a cascade multiplies its points: x2, x3, x4 and on.
Journey: 30 stages
Five places from Oasis to Night Caravan, six stages each, every one with its own starting board, a goal of lines, points or a cascade, and 18 to 27 pieces. Win with pieces to spare for three stars.
Race a friend
Send a link and race on the same 30 or 60 pieces at the same time, each on your own board, with your friend's board shown beside yours. The higher score wins.
Daily dune
Once a day everyone gets the same starting sand and the same pieces in the same order, and the score is compared with that day's players.
Streaks and hard mode
Clearing on consecutive moves builds a streak that multiplies every clear. A cascade of three unlocks hard mode: no sand preview and big shapes from the start.
Tips
- A gap under a row is a fuse: clear the row above it and its sand fills the gap, which can finish the row below for a cascade.
- Columns never pour, because every block in a full column sits on another one. Use columns to clear space and rows over gaps to fill holes.
- While you hold a piece over a spot that clears, faint sand shows where each grain will land; look for a lower row that the sand would finish.
- Keep a 3x3 opening as long as you can: the big shapes come more often after the first few dozen pieces.
- Each cascade step multiplies the clear before it, so one deep cascade is worth more than several single clears.
Frequently asked questions
When does sand pour, and when does it blow away?
A cleared block turns to sand only if the cell right under it was empty before the clear. A block that sat on another block or on the floor has nowhere to go, so its sand blows off the board. Sand already on the board always falls until it rests on something.
Why did my column clear without leaving any sand?
In a full column every block sits on another one, so none of them has a gap underneath. Columns always clear clean; rows over gaps are what pour sand.
How do I get a high score?
Build cascades: leave a gap under a row on purpose, finish the row above it, and let the sand complete the lower row. Keep the streak alive by clearing at least once every three moves.
When is the run over?
When none of the three pieces on offer fits anywhere on the board. Pieces cannot be turned, so keep room for long lines and the 3x3 square.
How do Journey stages open?
Each place plays its first stage you have not won yet. A place opens once you win four stages of the place before it. Stars come from winning with a quarter or half of the pieces to spare.
Can I play on my phone?
Yes. Drag pieces with a finger; the piece lifts above your fingertip so you can see where it lands. It works upright and sideways.
