About Ballast Hangman
Every wrong letter you call is stamped on a sandbag and hung from your basket. Six bags and the balloon settles into the field. But a heap of bad guesses is still a heap of letters, and a sharp eye can spell its way back into the sky, over meadows, chalk cliffs, red canyons and a town at night.
Hangman with a hot air balloon: call letters to find the word, and when the sandbags of your wrong letters spell a word, cut them loose and climb.
How to play Ballast Hangman
Each word shows as blank tiles under a category. Tap or type a letter: if the word has it, every place of that letter turns over; if not, the letter hangs from the balloon as a sandbag and the balloon sinks. At six bags it touches down and the flight ends. Bags stay on for the whole flight of three to five words. Whenever the letters on your bags spell a word of three letters or more, press Cut loose, spell it with your bags and those bags drop away. Hits in a row build an updraft that doubles and then triples letter points.
Controls
- Touch
- Tap a letter key to call it, tap Cut loose and then your bags to spell a word.
- Mouse
- Click the letter keys, Cut loose and the bags.
- Keyboard
- Type a letter to call it; Space opens Cut loose, where typing spells with your bags, Backspace undoes, Enter cuts and Escape goes back.
Features
Cut loose
Wrong letters hang on the balloon as sandbags. When they spell a word, cut them loose: the balloon climbs back and the word scores by its length.
Six chapters, 48 flights
Meadow Fair teaches the basics, then each place adds a rule: wind marks on the Chalk Coast, a cipher in the Red Canyon, two words at once at Lake Woods, phrases on the Glacier Peaks, and all of them over the Northern Night.
Daily flight
Five words for everyone each day, one of every kind, with a percentile against the day's other players.
Long haul and hard mode
Long haul keeps the words coming until you touch down. Hard mode sets you down at five bags, needs four letters for a cut and gives no bag hints.
Play with a friend
Share a link and race a friend on the same words in turns: a hit keeps your turn, a miss loads your own balloon, and cutting loose is a free move.
Tips
- A missed vowel is the most useful bag you can carry: it turns a pile of consonants into a word you can cut loose.
- Call the common letters first (E, A, R, T, O) while the balloon is light, and save rare letters for when the pattern points at them.
- Do not rush a cut: a longer word drops more bags and scores far more (three letters 60, six letters 210).
- On gust words, think about which letter sits under the wind mark: finding it blows away your newest bag.
- In cipher words the same sign is always the same letter, so look for a sign that repeats and try the letters that double in words of that category.
Frequently asked questions
Is there a hanged figure?
No. The stake is a hot air balloon that sinks a little with each wrong letter and settles in the field after six.
When can I cut bags loose?
Any time the letters on at least three of your bags spell a word in the game's word list. Press Cut loose, tap the bags in the order of the word, then Cut. In normal mode the game tells you when a word is there and how long it is, but not which word.
Do bags stay between words?
Yes, for the whole flight of three to five words. A new flight starts with an empty basket.
Can I play on my phone?
Yes. Tap the letters on the on-screen keyboard; on a computer you can also type on your own keyboard.
Is my progress saved?
Cleared flights, stars and missions are kept on this device, and a daily flight you started picks up where you left it after a reload.
