About Shale Falling Blocks
Shale forms one thin layer at a time. Here you lay the layers yourself with seven kinds of carved stone, from a sunlit riverbed down to a caldera, and every row you complete is pressed away to make room for the next.
Turn and drop falling stones, clear full rows and tamp the well when holes pile up. 48 campaign stages, endless, a daily seam and online duels.
How to play Shale Falling Blocks
Stones of four squares fall into a well ten columns wide. Slide and turn each one before it lands; a row with no gaps clears and everything above it drops. The queue shows the next stones, Hold keeps one for later (once per stone) and the outline at the bottom shows where the stone will land. A stone that touches down still slides and turns for half a second, up to fifteen moves. Clearing four rows at once is a Slab and scores the most; turning a stone into a slot it could not drop into is a Spin; clears on consecutive stones build a Chain. Every ten lines you clear charge the tamp: spend it and every column packs down into the gaps under it, then the rows that became full clear. On a touch screen, drag sideways to slide, tap to turn (right half clockwise, left half the other way), drag down to drop slowly, flick down to drop at once and flick up to hold; the Hold and Tamp buttons sit under the well. In a duel every clear of two rows or more pushes rubble rows into the rival's well, and their clears push rubble into yours; the first well to overflow loses the round.

Features
Six chapters, 48 stages
From the Riverbed's basics to rising rubble in the Quarry, gravity-free puzzles on the Fault line, crystals in the Geode, speed surges on the Scree slope and rival duels in the Caldera.
The tamp
Every ten lines charge a tamp that packs each column down into its gaps, so a messy well clears rows instead of ending the run.
Online duels
Play a friend with a room link, first to two or three rounds; cleared rows land in the other well as rubble, and a bot keeps your well going if your connection drops.
Endless and a daily seam
Endless speeds up every ten lines to level 20; the daily seam gives everyone the same stones and the same rubble floor for three minutes.
Handling you can tune
Set the delay before a held arrow repeats, the repeat speed and the soft drop speed in Controls, including an instant repeat.
Tips
- Keep one column at the side open and build the rest flat: a long stone dropped into it clears four rows, worth more than four single clears.
- Watch the queue, not only the falling stone: if the next two stones fit the same gap, place the current one elsewhere.
- Save a tamp for when holes start to pile up; it turns every column with holes under it into filled rows, often three or four at once.
- Hold the long stone when your side column is not deep enough yet, and swap it back in once four rows are ready.
- In a duel, clearing rows while rubble is incoming cancels it row for row before it reaches your well.
Frequently asked questions
Can I play Shale on a phone?
Yes. Drag to slide, tap to turn, flick down to drop and flick up to hold; the Hold and Tamp buttons sit under the well. It works upright and sideways.
What does the tamp do?
It packs every column down, so each settled square falls into the empty cells beneath it, and then every row that became full clears. Ten cleared lines charge one tamp; you can hold two.
How do online duels work?
Create a room, send the link, and you both get the same stones. Clearing two rows or more sends rubble into the other well, and after ninety seconds the floor starts rising under both.
Is my progress saved?
Stage stars, best scores, unlocked rivals and your control settings are saved on this device and move to another one with the site's device sync.
Is there a hard mode?
Clearing the first chapter or scoring 15,000 in Endless unlocks it: the speed starts four levels higher and only two stones show in the queue.
