About Quire Word Search
A quire is a gathering of folded sheets, and these six belong to a collector of words: a herbarium, a ship's logbook, a merchant's ledger, a star atlas, a station timetable and an old folio. Lift a word off a page and everything above it settles into the gap.
A themed word search where found words lift off and the page falls. Set off linked words that close up by themselves across 48 pages.
How to play Quire Word Search
Find the words on the list by dragging across them on the page, from the first letter to the last or the other way round. Words run in a straight line across, down or on a diagonal, and from the second chapter also backwards. A found word lifts off the page, the letters above it fall into the gap and fresh letters slide in at the top. Linked words, marked with a link on the list, are split in two around another word in the same column: find the word between the halves and the top half drops onto the bottom half, the linked word completes by itself and lifts off as a cascade, which can drop the next one. Finds made within a few seconds of each other raise the combo up to x3, and cascades score double. Gold letters double a word and give a Lens; Lens circles the first letter of a word you have not found. Clear every word on the list to clear the page. Fog hides the top rows until finds lift it, and timetable pages run against a clock that every find tops up.
Controls
- Touch
- Drag across a word on the page; the letters you cover show above your finger. Tap Lens for a hint and Pages for the list of pages.
- Mouse
- Drag across a word with the mouse, from either end.
- Keyboard
- Arrow keys move the cursor, Space or Enter starts a selection, arrows stretch it and Space or Enter finds the word. L uses a Lens, M opens the pages and Escape cancels a selection.
Features
48 themed pages in six chapters
Herbarium, Logbook, Ledger, Star Atlas, Timetable and Folio hold eight pages each, from 8x8 to 13x14. Every chapter brings its own paper and a new rule: diagonal and backwards words, gold letters, fog, timed waves and large pages.
A page that falls
Found words lift off and the letters above drop into the gap. Linked words close up when the word between their halves is found and lift off by themselves, sometimes two in a row.
Combos and stars
Quick finds raise the combo to x3. Each page gives a star for clearing it, one for beating its par time and one for clearing it without Lens.
Classic, daily and hard
Classic pages are the plain word search, nothing falls and found words stay marked, at 10x10, 12x12 or 15x15. The daily page is the same for everyone that day, and hard mode opens after the first chapter.
Race a friend
Play with a friend on one page for three minutes. A word either player finds lifts for both, the page falls for both, and the higher score wins.
Tips
- Look for the word that sits between the two halves of a linked word: finding it sets off a cascade.
- Find words close together in time; the combo climbs to x3 and cascades score double at the current rate.
- Find a word under the fog first: every find lifts one row, and letters above fall out of the fog.
- Gold letters are always part of a word on the list, so a gold tile is a good place to start looking.
- On a timetable page, short words are quick seconds on the clock; save the long ones for when the list runs low.
Frequently asked questions
Can a word break when the page falls?
No. Every word on the list stays whole and in a straight line whatever order you find the words in. Only the letters around them change.
What are linked words?
Words marked with a link on the list are split in two around another word in the same column. When every word between the halves is found, the top half drops onto the bottom half and the linked word is found for you.
Do I have to drag from the first letter?
No. A drag from the last letter to the first finds the word too.
How do I get more Lens?
Each page starts with three. Every gold letter in a word you find and every bonus word gives one more. Lens is off in hard mode.
Is my progress saved?
Yes. Stars, opened pages and the page you are in the middle of stay on this device, and the site's device sync can move them to another one.
What changes in hard mode?
Words run in all eight directions on every page, Lens is off and the combo window is four seconds instead of seven.
