About Zarif Backgammon
A folding walnut case on a tea house table, ivory checkers on your side and dark ones across. The dice clatter on the felt, the regular opposite you counts the pips out loud, and nobody leaves after a single game.
Backgammon (tavla) against a computer opponent with three levels. Play a match to 1, 3 or 5 points; a gammon counts 2 and a backgammon 3.
How to play Zarif Backgammon
Each side has 15 checkers and moves them round the board in opposite directions, towards its own home board next to the tray; you play the ivory checkers. Roll the dice, then move one checker by each number, or one checker by both. Doubles are played four times. Tap a checker to see where it can go and tap a lit point, or drag it there; Undo takes back moves until you press Done. A checker may not land on a point held by two or more of the opponent's checkers; landing on a single one hits it and sends it to the bar, and a checker on the bar has to come back in on the opponent's home board before anything else moves. You must play both dice when you can, and the larger one when only one fits. Once all 15 are in your home board you bear them off; the first side to bear off every checker wins the game. The loser pays 1 point, 2 for a gammon (none of their checkers borne off) and 3 for a backgammon (one still on the bar or in the winner's home board). First to the chosen points wins the match. Matches are played without the doubling cube.
Controls

- Mouse
- Click a checker to see where it can go, then click the lit point you want, or drag the checker straight there.
- Keyboard
- Space or Enter rolls the dice, finishes your turn, or moves on from the result screen; Backspace, Z, or U undoes your last move.
Features
Three opponent levels
Play against Easy, Medium, or Hard from the title screen; each one is a real step up, and Hard also weighs risk against the match score instead of always playing the safest board move.
A separate record per level
Wins, games played, and win streak are saved for each of the three levels on its own, so a run against Easy never touches your Hard record.
1, 3, or 5-point matches
Pick the match length before you start. A 1-point match decides fast; a 5-point match gives a gammon or backgammon room to swing the whole result.
20 missions
Work through 20 missions, from your first win up to 25 match wins, 100 checkers hit, and a 3-match winning streak against Hard.
3 star goals every match
Each match offers 3 goals worth a star: win the match, win it as a gammon, and hit the opponent's checkers 3 times.
Tap, drag, or keyboard
Move a checker by tapping it then a lit point, by dragging it there, or from the keyboard; undo any move before you press Done.
Tips
- Make your 5 point and your bar point early: a checker blocked behind a row of four or five points loses the game from the back.
- Leave a lone checker only where few rolls can hit it; count the shots, direct ones within 6 pips are the dangerous ones.
- When your opponent has a checker on the bar, every point you hold in your home board takes away one of its entry numbers.
- Check the pip count: when you are well ahead, break contact and race; when you are behind, keep an anchor in the opponent's home board and wait for a shot.
- When bearing off with the opponent still behind you, clear the highest points first and avoid leaving gaps that force a blot.
Frequently asked questions
How many difficulty levels does Zarif have?
Three: Easy, Medium, and Hard. Your win record, games played, and streak are tracked separately for each one, so switching levels never resets what you built on another.
What does the Hard opponent do differently from Medium and Easy?
Hard plays a stronger overall game, and it is the only level that changes its risk-taking based on the match score rather than always playing the position the same way.
How many missions are there, and which are the hardest?
20 in total. The steepest ask for 25 match wins, 100 checkers hit across your games, and 3 match wins in a row against the Hard opponent.
Can I undo a move?
Yes, as many times as you like during your own turn, until you press Done. Once a turn is finished, it stands.
Does Zarif save my progress? Do I need an account?
There is no account, ever. Your matches, missions, and win record are saved on this device; to carry them to another device, use the site's sync code.
Can I play Zarif on my phone?
Yes, the board is laid out for phone screens in portrait, and checkers move the same way as on desktop: tap-tap or drag.
