About Shisham Carrom
A shisham board on a veranda, powdered for the evening. Kabir flicks hard and hopes, Tania never leaves the queen uncovered, and Imran cuts men into pockets you did not know were open.
Carrom on a 74 cm board: ICF rules with the queen, dues and board points, freestyle points, 36 trick-shot boards and play with a friend.
How to play Shisham Carrom
Slide the striker along your base on the rail under the board: it must touch both base lines and either cover a red base circle fully or stay clear of it. Drag back from the striker and let go; the further you pull, the harder the flick, and the line shows where the striker meets the first man and a short mark for that man's direction. Carrom: the breaker plays white. Pocket one of your own men and you strike again; men of the other side that you pocket count for them. The queen, the red man, may go in once one of your men is down and must be covered by pocketing one of your own men in the same or the next stroke, or she goes back to the centre. Pocketing the striker is a due: one of your pocketed men goes back to the centre, or the next one you pocket if none is down yet; with your own men in the same stroke they go back too and you strike again. Pocketing the other side's last man, or your own last man while the queen is still out, loses the board. The winner of a board scores a point for every man the other side has left and 3 more for a queen they covered, until they reach 22. Play one board, three boards, or a full game to 25 points or 8 boards against Kabir, Tania or Imran. Freestyle: every man counts for whoever pockets it, white 20, black 10, and the queen 50 once covered. Trick shots: 36 boards in six chapters, each with a number of misses; strokes in a row that pocket a white form a run that multiplies the points. Streak sight: every stroke in a row that pockets one of your men lengthens your guide, first the man's line, then its whole path, then where the striker goes after the contact; a stroke that misses takes it away. The daily board is the same scatter for everyone that day. Beating Imran at carrom opens hard mode: three boards against Imran at full strength with no line past the contact. Play with a friend sets up two players face to face or doubles with partners opposite.

Tips
- Place the striker before you aim: a straight line from the base to the man and on to a pocket beats a thin cut from a bad spot.
- Keep the queen for when one of your men sits near a pocket, so you can cover her on the next stroke.
- A man between your base and your own pockets is played with a cut: send the striker across it at an angle, or off the side frame.
- Strike softly when a man hangs on a lip: a hard stroke can carry the striker into the pocket after it and cost you a due.
- In trick shots, a run of pocketing strokes multiplies the points and opens the streak sight, so take the sure pot before the clever one.
Frequently asked questions
What are the rules of carrom in Shisham Carrom?
The International Carrom Federation laws: the breaker plays white, a pocketed own man gives another stroke, the queen needs a man of yours down first and must be covered, the striker in a pocket is a due, and a board's winner scores the men the other side has left plus 3 for the queen.
When can I pocket the queen?
Once at least one of your own men is down. You then have to cover her by pocketing one of your own men in the same or the next stroke; otherwise she goes back to the centre circle.
What happens when the striker goes into a pocket?
It is a due: one of your pocketed men goes back to the centre and your turn passes. If you have none down yet, the due waits until you pocket one. Own men pocketed with the striker go back too, and then you strike again.
How is freestyle different from carrom?
In freestyle any man counts for whoever pockets it: white 20 points, black 10, and the queen 50 once you cover her. The board ends when every man is down and the higher total wins.
Can I play carrom with a friend or in doubles?
Yes. Play with a friend makes a room link for two players face to face, or four in doubles with partners sitting opposite, on phones or computers.
