About Onyx Reversi
Every disc here is onyx on one face and alabaster on the other, laid on green baize in a black stone frame. Sixty-four squares, one rule, and a lead that can turn over in a single move.
Reversi against the computer: five levels from Beginner to Master, a ladder of ten opponents, 60 endgame puzzles and a daily puzzle.
How to play Onyx Reversi
On the title screen pick Match, Ladder or Puzzles, then press Play. Tap an empty square to place a disc: it must trap at least one straight line of the other colour (across, down or diagonal) between the new disc and one of yours, and every trapped line turns over. The dots show where you can play; point at a dot with the mouse to see which discs would turn, or move between the dots with Tab and the arrow keys and play with Enter. A side with no legal move passes, and the game ends when neither side can move. The player with more discs wins; empty squares go to the winner. Match: choose Black (moves first) or White, a level from 1 Beginner to 5 Master, and a standard or a varied start (a balanced position a few moves in). Undo takes back your last move and the reply, Hint marks the move the computer would choose for you. Ladder: ten opponents from Magpie to Master, each with its own way of playing; beat one to open the next. Puzzles: six chapters of ten endings, from 4 to 12 empty squares, where you must win or finish with a set number of discs against the best defence; exactly one first move works, and a wrong move is taken back. The daily puzzle is the same for every player. Winning at level 3, beating the third ladder opponent or solving a puzzle from chapter 2 opens hard mode: no undo, no hints, no move dots, and one wrong move ends a puzzle.

Tips
- A corner can never be turned back: take one when you can, and keep off the square diagonally next to an empty corner, which usually hands that corner over.
- Early in the game, turning fewer discs is often better: it leaves your opponent fewer moves and keeps more for you.
- Count your opponent's replies before you move; a move that leaves them only bad squares is worth more than one that turns many discs.
- A disc on an edge is safe only when it cannot be attacked from both ends; a lone edge disc is often turned straight back.
- In the last dozen moves, try to make the final move in each empty region of the board: it is often worth several discs.
