About Postern Escape Room
The old Postern house was built with a wall through every room and a door in each wall that needs two keys. One of you stands on the Sun side, the other on the Moon side, and the clue to every lock you touch is on your partner's side of the wall.
A co-op escape room for two: each player sees a different half of every lock. Share what you see, open 24 rooms and turn both keys together.
How to play Postern Escape Room
Each room has a lamp for every lock and two keyholes on the door between the sides. A lock is a mechanism on one side: glyph wheels, a wiring board, a mirror grid, a balance, a dark maze or bell ropes. What it must be set to is written on the other side: a cipher card, a wiring manual, a camera image, a ledger, a map or a bell sheet. Tell each other what you see, set the mechanism and pull its handle; a wrong answer is a strike. Writing in hidden ink shows only on the side that holds the brass lens, which you pass through the hatch. When every lamp is lit, both players turn their keys within a second and a half of each other. Alone, you hold both sides on a split screen, or play the Sun side with a helper on the Moon side.
Controls
- Touch
- Tap a wheel half, cable, terminal, mirror, weight, rope or arrow to work it, tap a sign in the tray to send it, and tap the keyhole when every lamp is lit.
- Mouse
- Click to work the mechanisms; drag a cable onto a terminal or click the cable and then the terminal.
- Keyboard
- Tab and arrow keys move between controls and Enter uses them; W, A, S and D walk the lantern, L sends the lens, K turns your key and H asks for a hint.
Features
Six chapters, 24 rooms
The study, the workshop, the observatory, the apothecary, the cellar and the bell tower. Each chapter brings a new mechanism, and later rooms combine up to three locks.
Two sides of every lock
Every lock needs what both players see: the mechanism on one side, the cipher, manual, camera image, ledger, map or bell sheet on the other. Neither side can open a room alone.
Play with a friend online
Two devices, one room: each player sees only their own side and talks through glyph, picture, colour, number, arrow and word signals, markers on shared grids and a 3-2-1 count. A bot partner takes over if a player drops out.
Alone on a split screen or with a helper
Hold both sides yourself with the halves side by side, or play the Sun side while a helper on the Moon side signals what it sees.
Stars, a daily room and hard mode
Three stars per room for opening it, beating par and needing no hint or strike. A daily room for everyone, and a hard mode with no hints where every third strike locks the room again.
Tips
- Say what you see before you guess: on a glyph lock the operator names the pictures in order, then the cipher side reads back one glyph per picture.
- On a wiring board, give the fuse colour, the gauge reading and the serial glyph first; the manual's first rule that fits picks the diagram, and later rules no longer matter.
- Read your own hidden ink before you send the lens across, and send it as soon as you are done: the lens is the only thing in the house that crosses the wall.
- In the dark cellar the walker sees only the walls of the lantern's cell; walk the map reader's arrows one at a time, because the oil covers the shortest way and only a few steps more.
- On the bell ropes, name your partner's bell, then count down together: the two bells of a pair must ring within a second of each other or the peal starts again.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a friend to play?
No. Alone you can hold both sides on one screen, or pick the helper and play the Sun side while a bot on the Moon side tells you what it sees.
How do we talk without a chat?
The signal tray sends glyphs, pictures, colours, numbers, arrows and the words yes, no, wait, ready, lens and a 3-2-1 count, and the camera and map sides can place markers the other side sees. Many pairs also talk on a phone call.
What happens if my partner loses connection?
A bot partner takes over their side at once and keeps sharing clues. When they come back with the same link, they take their side over where the bot left it.
Is my progress saved?
Yes. Opened rooms, stars and best scores are saved on this device and move to another device with the site's device sync.
Why does the key not turn?
Every lamp on the door must be lit first, and both keys must turn within a second and a half of each other online, or four seconds when one player holds both sides.
