About Mettle Fighting
Every autumn the sparring halls send their best up the mountain road, bout by bout, to the shrine where the Warden waits. Nobody bleeds and nobody is cut: the bout goes to whoever reads the other first.
One-on-one martial arts fighting game: press back just before a blow for a Clean Block, store Focus and spend it on harder specials. 9 fighters, 8 arenas.
How to play Mettle Fighting
Walk with left and right, jump with up and crouch with down. Punch, Kick and Special are the three buttons. Hold back, away from your rival, to block; crouch to block a low sweep and stand to block an overhead. Press back just before a blow lands and it is a Clean Block: you take no push, recover at once and store one Focus pip, up to three. Your next special (Special alone, or down, forward or back with Special) spends every pip you hold and comes out stronger: one pip hits harder and knocks down, two bounce your rival off the wall, three make it a Finisher. Punch, punch, kick while each blow connects is a string, and any normal blow that connects can be cut short into a special. Forward with Special next to your rival is a throw; any button pressed right after you are grabbed breaks it. Win two rounds to win the bout.
Controls
- Touch
- The pad on the left moves, jumps and crouches; the three buttons on the right punch, kick and use your special.
- Keyboard
- Arrow keys or WASD move, J punches, K kicks and L uses your special (Z, X and C work too); in Versus player 1 uses WASD with F, G, H and player 2 the arrows with comma, full stop and slash. Esc pauses.
Features
Clean Block and Focus
Press back within a fifth of a second before a blow lands to store a Focus pip. Spend one, two or three on your next special for more damage, a wall bounce or a Finisher.
9 fighters, each with four specials
A balanced kicker, a grappler, a rushdown, a ripple zoner, a long-reach kicker, a counter fighter, an acrobat, an armoured guard and the Warden. Four start open; the rest open as you beat them.
An 8-bout ladder with arena rules
Cedar Dojo, Bell Tower, Tide Pier, Bamboo Grove, Market Roof, Frozen Lake, Forge Hall and Summit Shrine, each with its own rule: bell tolls, waves, wind gusts, close walls, ice and steam vents.
Training with a lesson
A seven-step lesson walks you from walking to strings, then a dummy that stands, blocks, attacks on a beat or spars back, with the move list on screen.
Daily bouts, hard mode and missions
Three daily bouts with the same fighter and rivals for everyone, a hard ladder where rivals react faster and start each round with Focus, and 20 missions.
Two players, on one keyboard or online
Versus puts two players on one keyboard. Play with a friend sends a link for a real-time match; if someone leaves, a bot fights on for them.
Tips
- Do not hold back all the time: let go and press back as the rival swings, and every read turns into a Clean Block and a free punish.
- Save Focus for a hit you are sure of: a string that connects, cancelled into a special, spends three pips on a Finisher that takes about a third of a health bar.
- A rival who blocks everything can still be thrown: step in and press forward with Special.
- Crouch kick is low and forward kick is an overhead: mix them and a careful blocker has to guess.
- Every arena has its own rule: on the pier jump the waves, in the forge stay off the vents when they hiss, at the bell tower wait for the toll before you read.
Frequently asked questions
What is a Clean Block?
A block you start just before the blow lands: let go of back and press it again within a fifth of a second of the hit. You take no push, can act at once and store one Focus pip. Holding back the whole time still blocks, but stores nothing.
How do I spend Focus?
Use any special. It spends every pip you hold: one pip adds damage and a knockdown, two add a wall bounce and a safe start, three turn the special into a Finisher.
How do I play on a phone?
The pad on the left moves, jumps and crouches; the three buttons on the right are Punch, Kick and Special. Hold the pad away from your rival to block. Versus on one screen needs a keyboard, but Play with a friend works on phones.
How do I open more fighters?
Tamsin, Lio, Bodo and Senna are open from the start. Beat any other fighter in Arcade to choose them from then on. Clearing the whole ladder once opens the Warden.
Is my progress saved?
Yes, on this device. Each fighter keeps their place on the ladder, and opened fighters, missions and best scores stay.
Can I play Mettle against a friend?
Yes. On one computer, pick Versus: player 1 uses WASD with F, G and H, player 2 the arrow keys with comma, full stop and slash. Online, choose Play with a friend, pick an arena and send the link; both of you choose a fighter and the match runs in real time. No account is needed, and a bot takes over if someone leaves.
